What is a Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde system?

Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde | The Exhaust is an electronically adjustable exhaust system which makes it possible to choose between three different sound modes on the fly. An exhaust second to none with regards to performance, esthetics and power. Street legal, 4 year warranty.

For which brands is a Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde system available?

The exhaust systems are available for the following brands: Harley-Davidson, Triumph, Indian, BMW and Victory. In our configurator you can check if there is an exhaust available for your specific model.

How does the system work?

Our system has a valve that you can control with the mode switch. With the switch you can choose between the different sound modes. Thanks to our specially developed system, you can drive perfectly legally in any mode. Our software is programmed to intervene subtly and almost imperceptibly when the parameters set by the legislation are reached.

What does the European Type approval mean?

Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde | The Exhaust is a completely legal exhaust system that complies with European laws and is ECE, EG-BE and TÜV approved. Our exhaust systems are tested and developed following the highest European standards and guidelines. Our systems are compliant with the highest obligatory standards in:

  • Emission
  • Sound levels
  • Performance

This means that it is a fully street legal system and that it is compliant with the European legislation and laws.

What do Euro 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5+ mean?

A Euro standard for motorcycles is a European emission standard that sets limits for the emission of harmful substances such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). These standards aim to improve air quality and reduce environmental pollution. Each new Euro standard (Euro 1, Euro 2, etc.) sets stricter emission requirements, prompting motorcycle manufacturers to adopt more advanced technologies.

From 2025, Euro 5 Plus or B will come into effect. This will make the Lambda sensor after the catalytic converter mandatory, and the lifespan of the catalytic converter will be considered.

Euro Standard & Year of Implementation

Euro 1 - 1999
Euro 2 - 2003
Euro 3 - 2006
Euro 4 - 2016
Euro 5 - 2020
Euro 5+ - 2025

What is R41.05?

R41.05 is a sound standard for motorcycles within the European Union. This standard limits the noise that motorcycles can produce to reduce noise pollution. The R41.05 standard sets maximum noise levels depending on the type of motorcycle and its speed, and motorcycles must undergo tests to prove they meet these noise limits before they can be marketed. R41.05 is a stricter version of the R41.04 standard and applies to new motorcycles from 2024. From 2025, this standard is mandatory for all motorcycles. Aftermarket exhaust manufacturers must also comply with this standard. If they do not, the exhausts are illegal and you risk a fine.

Why does my exhaust adjust automatically?

All our exhausts comply with European regulations. Sound is an important element to prevent sound pollution. Our system is designed so that you, as a customer, can select a mode that is desired at that moment. However, when your sound exceeds the limit, it is automatically adjusted in the background through the valve position, so you always experience the maximum sound within legal limits. Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde ensures that you are always 100% legal and still have a maximum riding experience.

How active your system is depends on the Euro standard your motorcycle must comply with and which system you have on your motorcycle. From 2024, some motorcycles have been approved according to the R41.05 measurement, and Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde has introduced the most advanced system where the communication between the motorcycle and our exhaust is very dynamic for the ultimate riding experience within the new sound limits.

We advise you to check at your local dealer what kind of options you have. In most cases it is not necessary but sometimes it is better for the overall riding experience. Exhaust, air intake and fuel are the 3 elements that are connected, if you change 2 out of 3 it's necessary to change the 3rd one as well. This check is highly recommend when other non-original parts are installed on the bike.

What is the difference between the Blackbox and Smartbox option?

Do I need to get a separate type approval once I have a Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde on my motorcycle?

No. Once you have purchased a Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde exhaust system you will receive a type approval card which matches the number on your exhaust system. The number on the type approval card also corresponds with the motorcycle number in your papers.

Can I install a Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde system myself?

We strive to maintain the high quality for the riders, therefor you can only buy our system at official dealers with certified mechanics who have been trained by The Jekill and Hyde Company. This way we can ensure the quality of the installation and the functioning of the exhaust.

Do the different end caps provide a different sound?

The sound of our system is for 90% created by the damper, so the end cap has a minimal influence on the actual sound of the exhaust system. An end cap can be easily exchanged for a different design.

How should I clean my exhaust?

Al our exhaust are made from stainless steel, this doesn’t mean you don’t have to treat the surface. It’s important to maintain your exhaust surface to keep it in a mint condition.

For chrome use first of all warm water to wash the sand off, after you can use chrome cleaner to clean and protect the chrome

For black and satin chrome use first of all warm water to wash the sand off, warm water with a clean soft towel.

Note: never clean the exhaust when it’s hot!

Do I have a Can-bus bike or not?

Can-bus is a way of communication on the bike Can (controlled area network) this make it possible to work with the modern features. From the outside it is not always possible to recognize if it is a Can-bus bike. When you go to our configurator and select your bike and model year it will automatically show you if it will work with or without Can-bus. After this, the possible(s) systems will appear.

Questions about header heat tape?

When you use tape on the headers it will protect the rider for extreme header temperatures, this heat will be guided down the pipe in to the exhaust. Since this can lead to extreme temperatures that could lead to failures in regard to the surface of the exhaust. Extraordinary heating is not our responsibility and thus taping your headers will terminate your warranty.
